Cakewalk Style Shop

Sometimes you don’t need to look any further than your own back yard (or front door)… such was the case for Gina Cartwright and Jennifer Grigsby-  the stylish, down-to-earth duo behind Cakewalk Style Shop. Five years went by before next-door neighbors Gina and Jennifer officially met and immediately clicked.

G: I Grew up in Houston – it’s my home, but I think it’s a great place to have a boutique like ours because there’s very few privately owned, little, personalized boutiques that can give attention to the customer, as well as customer service.

What was your vision for your boutique?

G: The name Cakewalk came into play when we wanted to do the blog. Jen had a reputation for being super stylish, and she always knew where to get everything online, so we wanted to think of a name that exemplified effortless style and we said it should be like a cakewalk, it should be super easy. Instead of grabbing the same pair of denim and an insignificant t-shirt, there’s a way to elevate that a little bit; like throw on an equipment blouse, and a great pair of MOTHER jeans, and all of a sudden it’s the same effort, but you look that much more put together. Also, it sort of related to fashion because “cakewalk” makes you think “catwalk”

J: Also, there’s an art to incorporating the trends, and it can go very wrong, and so we wanted to be able to help people learn many different ways to wear something, what to wear it with – we love to teach them how to mix and match, maximizing the cost per wear. We wanted to make the trends accessible for peopleWhat distinguishes you from other boutiques?

What distinguishes you from other boutiques?

G: We are online. Almost everything we have in the store is online, and we love having people check out our site across the country. We’ve also worked to garner national press, in which we’ve gone to national magazines, and have recently had coverage in some Weekly’s.

J: I think the way we put together our buys is something that distinguishes us. We might carry the same brands as another boutique in town, but our buys are totally different because it comes from our aesthetic, and we sell what we love.

What trends do you see most from women in Houston?

J: Women in Houston love body-con, so we pay attention to buying body-con pieces that we think can still be very sophisticated and elegant. Southern women also love playing with color.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

G: DVF – there’s always something for everyone.

J: We love Vince! But we have also love Tibi, Bec & Bridge, Equipment, Haute Hippie, who makes some really special pieces, and of course MOTHER Denim, we love it so much, it is why we opened our brick and mortar. The cuts are great, because they are a little more elevated; there is so much attention to detail. Sofia, is a local designer that we love.

Who is one of your fashion icons?

G: Babe Paley, Slim Keith, Cornelia Vanderbilt, Talitha Getty, Jane Birkin

J: Elin Kling
