As soon as August hit, it seemed like everyone started planning for fall. Although this may be a bit premature, we get it. There’s something about daydreaming of our fall wardrobe that makes this humidity a little more bearable. Just imagine: the shiver of autumn leaves, the feel of a cashmere sweater, the warmth of apple pie. Paradise!
Last week Neiman Marcus held their Neiman Marcus Fall Trends 2015 and gave us an opportunity to escape for a moment to this pumpkin flavored paradise. Over the course of a half hour they broke down all the essential trends. But if there is one overwhelming trend to know, it’s to be overwhelming. Forget just having one statement piece. This fall is all about layering them up.
Get ready, it may seem like summer is dragging on for forever, but fall is going to come with a bang!
Bohemian Folklore was a trend we saw this spring and summer and it’s something Neiman’s is predicting will carry on into fall. However, the fairytale is getting a bit darker as we journey into colder weather. Start with textures like suede, fur, velvet, and wool that absorb light and create a dramatic backdrop for your story. Tie in moody prints that dip into darker colors like black, dark teal, and bordeaux for dialog. Then finish off your look with embellishments of fringe, patchwork accessories, and embroidered details to add excitement. More is more with this trend; so don’t be afraid to pile on the statement pieces.
The goal of layering is to add dimension and interest to your outfit. However, in Houston, you have to be careful not to reach for anything too thick that you end up dying of heat exhaustion. The trick here is to pick lightweight lower layers – like sheer shirts and sleeveless blouses – and top layers that have some breathability to them – like loose knit ponchos and wide capes.
Want to look like you’ve been styled by a pro? Neiman’s suggests adding a more casual layer to a more formal look. Slip into some comfortable flats to finish off this cool, LA inspired look.
We were thrilled to see the colors Neiman’s highlighted during their presentation. Red and white are colors you probably already have in your closet. We definitely do. They’re classics revisited by designers, year after year. Neiman’s featured these colors in monochromatic looks this year.
The good news: you’ll be able to put these looks together easily, with maybe just a few updates.
Red is emotional. From the fiery punch of poppy to the sultry draw of sangria, red creates drama. Our tip: amplify the impact of your red look with textures, fits, and prints that compliment the shade you’re building off of. For example, dark bordeaux looks even better in deep velvet. Create a story with these details and you’ll create some serious visual impact.
The purity of white is what we are drawn to with this color. As life’s stressors weigh on us, white gives us an escape for our mind to rest in. Our tip: reach for looser fits in this color. You may be afrad that white widens, but lightweight fabrics in a loose cut will billow and make you look angelic.
Wild pants have been on trend for a while now, which makes us think a statement pair of trousers like Neiman’s suggests may be a smarter investment piece than you may realize. Wear them with pumps and a silk blouse and you’ll put the cocktail dress to shame. Slip on some flats and a vintage tee and you’re the best-dressed person at HEB. Even throw on a blazer for work and stand out in an office full of suits. The best part: they flatter your legs and pull attention away from other areas you may want to hide come holiday season.
